About Jim McIntyre

Jim McIntyre Self Portrait

After graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in journalism, Jim McIntyre worked several years in television news, as a writer, newsreel cameraman, and editor.  He then returned to UT and completed the MA and PhD degrees in American literature.  After graduation he taught in a small college in the midwest before returning to Austin, where he makes his home.

Having an interest in drawing since childhood, he was attracted to the pastel medium because it offers a good opportunity to combine the skills of drawing and painting.  He is a strong believer in the old saying that learning to draw is learning to see.

He is primarily a self-taught artist, though he has benefited from workshops with Daniel Greene, Albert Handell, Sherie McGraw, and Sally Strand.  He enjoys painting the landscape in plein air, and finds the Texas Hill Country an ideal location for that pursuit.

I am a strong believer in the old saying that learning to draw is learning to see.

Since the early 1980's he has been conducting a weekly life-drawing open studio for local artists.
